Born in Savannah Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Julian Killen Quattlebaum, Sr. and Helen Burkhalter Quattlebaum. She graduated from Pape School and then attended Hollins College in Virginia. After a serious horseback riding accident she returned to Savannah and graduated from Armstrong Junior College. She was a member of the Savannah Cotillion where she met and later married James Meredith Artley, her loving husband of 51 years.

She was a retired Director as well as the first woman Director of the Savannah Electric and Power Company. She was an avid sportswoman and a lover of animals. She enjoyed racing Lightning sailboats and was an early member of the Savannah Yacht Club. She and Barbara Ann McIntosh combined their love of sailing with their love of children to form the first Mariner Scout troop in Savannah. She was an avid fisherman and knew all of the best fishing drops in the Skidaway River. Along with fishing, she also enjoyed golfing with the 9-Holers at The Savannah Golf Club. She worked as a volunteer with Sally Mood in the early years of the Savannah Humane Society and has supported it ever since. She was a founding member of the Savannah Swim Team and became a self taught swimming coach for her son Will along with two others whom she coached well enough to become successful collegiate swimmers.
She is survived by her brother Julian Killen Quattlebaum, Jr. of Savannah, her sister Barbara Quattlebaum Parr of Atlanta, and her sister-in-law Margaret Deveraux Artley of Savannah; daughters Helen Artley Duffy of Savannah and Meredith Artley Bettencourt of Newport Coast, California and sons-in-law Robert Duffy and Phillip Bettencourt; sons James Meredith Artley, Jr. of Sylvania and William Quattlebaum Artley of Chicago, and daughters-in-law Linda Artley and Diane Hartley. The family wishes to thank Odyssey Health Care and all of Helen's caregivers.
